Jonas Basanavičius facing left, denomination below.
Jonas Basanavičius (1851 - 1927) was an activist of Lithuanian National Revival and founder of the first Lithuanian language newspaper Aušra, during the Lithuanian press ban. He was one of the initiators of the Organizing Committee of the 1905 Great Seimas of Vilnius. He was also the founder and chairman of the Lithuanian Scientific Society. As a member of the Council of Lithuania, he was a signatory of the Act of Independence of Lithuania.
